The newly launched consultation service has been developed to help both traditional farmers and commercial farming enterprises to maximise their space, produce, and return on investment.
In light of recent global food shortages and the instability of the food logistics industry that was exposed by the global pandemic, many nations are looking to become more self-sufficient. There is growing interest in the UK in hydroponic farming as a method of ensuring larger, more consistent yields.
By investing in vertical farming, farmers can harvest all year round and adapt LED lighting to improve flavours and growth rates. Hydroponic systems reduce the variables that are difficult to control in traditional growing methods, such as outdoor pests and the shifts in seasonal temperature resulting from climate change.
With this new service, Dr Blooms can advise farmers on using LED lighting which requires less headroom and lower running temperatures than traditional HID lighting, saving energy and allowing multiple levels of crops.
The company uses systems from two hydroponics suppliers, V-Farm and Vertical Future. Based in Hertfordshire, the latter is a pioneer in urban farming solutions, supplying fully fitted vertical farming containers. V-Farm, founded by HydroGarden in Coventry, uses its ‘Nutrient Film Technique’ to create bespoke growing rooms that are customisable and adaptable to different spaces.
With the launch of the consultation service, Dr Blooms aims to encourage farmers to fine-tune their methods in line with the urban farming ethos and the increased need for sustainability.
A spokesperson for the company said “Vertical farming is the way forward for the 21st century. By utilising the large headrooms of warehouses, we help solve overcrowding whilst increasing production levels exponentially. We can design a setup to maximise the area and supply the most up to date technology to build an efficient and profitable farm.”
